Something’s Got a Hold on Me
Etta James
1962

This song is over 60 years old now, but I actually hadn’t heard it until a couple of years ago when the movie CODA came out (despite what my brothers will tell you, it’s an excellent movie. Don’t listen to them in the comments.). This song is featured in the opening scene.

“At Last” is probably Etta’s best song (and certainly her most well known), but this is her most fun song. This is an old-timey, knee-slappin’, hand-clappin’, rabble-rousin’ good time. This is gospel, baby!  And the vocals.  Hot damn the vocals on this one.  She just has incredible control in this song and you can feel the soul just oozing through your speakers.  I'm sad I hadn't heard this until a couple years ago but I'm making up for lost time now.  And if you want a modern take, check out Christina's version here.  Greats imitating greats.
