Uprising
Muse
2009
So this was a total coin flip between two songs: a song featured in Pitch Perfect 2, and a song featured in one of the Twilight movies. Was that really a fair fight? Pitch Perfect 2 is an all timer, a classic, one of my favorites (oooh I can smell another Top 100 list brewing from miles away). Twilight is….well, I’m contractually obligated by marriage to not say anything bad about Twilight.
But I gave the edge to Uprising ever so slightly over Supermassive Black Hole, which is a fantastic song. But these were the only songs in contention. Just never been a huge Muse fan; I think I like three of their songs in total. When I hear that Muse is “a poor man’s Radiohead,” my reaction is always like, well sure, if you want to compare Warren Buffett to the people that Mother Teresa was helping in Calcutta. Like how poor are we talking here in relation to one of the greatest bands of all time? (That smell of yet another list is really strong now.)
Despite not being the world’s biggest Muse fan, I do love Uprising. It’s a repeat player on my running playlists, it’s an anthem. (Like an anthem for Karl Marx followers, but still an anthem!) It has this eerie/haunting vibe to it that I’ve always liked. That pulsating bass line. And the feeling of pure victory in listening to it.
