All These Things That I’ve Done
The Killers
2004
I could've chosen almost any song from The Killers' debut album, Hot Fuss -- Somebody Told Me and Mr. Brightside are usually the crowd-pleasers but literally every other song on this album is fantastic -- and on that front was this the best album of the the ‘00s? If there was something better please tell me. But this was ultimately a pretty easy call for me. I love the single note that’s played five times on the piano before Brandon Flowers comes in to a gorgeous piano/organ intro (almost reminds me a bit of the intro to John Paul Jones/Led Zeppelin’s “Your Time Is Gonna Come,” though the solo here in not as amazing). And then that vocal culminates in the line “if you can hold on / hold on” (look at that symmetry with our #95 pick!) before the drums and guitar kick in.
But the absolute best part of this song? The bridge, man. “I got soul, but I’m not a soldier” sung repeatedly for like 10 times to just one guy strumming a single note on the guitar, and then the gospel choir joins in. Epic.
My only lament is that I’ve never seen The Killers live. Somebody fix that for me.
