Unbelievers
Vampire Weekend
2013
This song is 10 years old, but I actually only discovered it a year and a half ago when by brother Trevor recommended it to me. He has a much more eclectic musical palate than I do (which is to say, he likes a bunch of weird stuff. Sorry Trev, but the truth must be told in the Top 100), and recommended Modern Vampires of the City as "one of the best and most accessible records of the 2010s" and thought it would be right up my alley.
As it turns out, Trevor was not wrong; the album was/is great and this is the jewel of that album. My buddies Andy and Trent and I were ruminating a few months ago about the songs that would go on our respective "happy" playlists (a precursor, if you will (and you will) to this whole exercise), and this song fits the very definition of a happy song for me, right next to #20 on my list (appearing in just six short weeks!). The minute this song is off to the races, I am subconsciously off and tapping my foot for the next three minutes and twenty-two seconds. And the lyrics from the opening line: "Got a little soul / The world is a cold, cold place to be / Want a little warmth / But who's gonna save a little warmth for me?" to the chorus: "We know the fire awaits unbelievers / All of the sinners the same / Girl , you and I will die unbelievers / Bound to the tracks of the train” are gold.
Wow. Just stop whatever you're doing and go listen to this right now, ok? It’s Trevor-approved!
